Panoptyc Data Usage Tips And Tricks

Panoptyc Data Usage Tips And Tricks

  • Processes Already In Place:
    • Panoptyc lowers resolution for each camera to extend storage days and lower data usage
    • Panoptyc sends alerts when certain data usage threshholds (8 or 10 GB) are cleared
    • If given the "green light" following an alert, Panoptyc turns the camera off if it's likely to exceed 10 GB data usage in the month
  • Processes Panoptyc is Implementing Now:
    • Automatically exiting users out of the video feed after 5 minutes of inactivity, so massive data usage can not occur accidentally
    • Ensuring the lowest bandwidth settings on each camera that is installed
  • Best Practices for Operators:
    • Don't create video walls. If you do create a video wall, delete it after use. Use the "Investigations" tab instead. Video wall creation can lead to high data usage.
      • Viewing a single camera through the Video Wall itself consumes a lot more data than just clicking a camera from the camera tab. This is because the video wall is still running in the background. This might be one cause of the data spike. We will contact you soon with more info.
    • Know that when you're reviewing past/recorded footage, that still consumes data
    • Don't watch more than 2-3 hours per month of a location on OptConnect
    • Operators can view their own data usage through their Rhombus console: https://www.loom.com/share/d0a7ac0875e04bfc8ae9e6fc83e4b149
    • If data usage is expected to be very high in a location, perhaps because of theft concerns, explore unlimited data usage plans through devices like the Nighthawk LTE Mobile Hotspot
  • Challenges for Panoptyc:
    • Panoptyc often doesn't know if a location is on OptConnect or Hardline until we see high data usage and then we ask the operator. Feel free to let us know when a location is OptConnect.
